Shasta Recycles The 3rd annual Mount Shasta Recycles! program was a big success. The Shasta Energy Group, the Mount Shasta Soccer Club, the Siskiyou Opportunity Center (SOC) and the Chamber of Commerce teamed up to make this year’s program the best yet. That success was supported by the funds the Shasta Energy Group received from the Mountain Runners, the Shasta Regional Community Foundation, and Jefferson Economic Development Institute’s Stewardship Fund. This year Shasta Energy Group diverted more than six hundred pounds of aluminum, glass and plastic from the landfill by providing recycling receptacles next to the garbage receptacles distributed throughout downtown Mount Shasta for the three days of the 4th of July celebration. This was an increase of 38% over last year’s haul. In addition, cardboard was collected in a dumpster (which was full) and added to the sorted recyclables on the SOC truck. Again this year, our volunteers made it happen. They collected recyclables (some of them reaching into the garbage receptacles to retrieve items placed I n the wrong bin), sorted them by material (plastic, glass, aluminum), and loaded them into the SOC truck. Our thanks to those devoted hard workers: Debbie Derby, MiRaEl, Tyler Hawkins, Justin McCoy, Dennis McFall, Stacy Molere, Richard Morrison, Neil Posson, Stephane Posson, Erica Rhine, Dana Smitt, Sandy Taylor and Kat Werle. This important program would not happen without them. We believe that the efforts of our staff and volunteers to make sure that almost every recyclable made it to the SOC truck inspired the more than 5,000 visitors to not only recycle, but to take care of our wonderful natural environment
