Our Vision:

Through education and demonstration, SEG inspires communities and individuals to make sound sustainable choices. Efficient and innovative technologies provide the county’s energy needs from renewable sources.

Basic Tenets of Our Efforts…
Sustainability: What it means to us

We have abundant opportunity in our backyard to utilize renewable energy and create thriving sociopolitical economic and ecological systems in our area.

We believe in taking the steps to increase our use of renewable energy sources including energy efficiency in homes and buildings, solar, wind, water, fuel cell and biomass.

We believe if people knew more about how sustainability works, the more it would make sense to them and people will see that state-of-the-art practices are realistic and achievable. People will be less willing to settle for band-aid solutions.

Holistic and integrated solutions include partnerships and take into account a broad spectrum of factors including human and ecological needs.

Most importantly we want to leave a quality legacy for our children.

Goals: Longer term (5- 10 years)

  • Sustainability Forum inspires people to make changes. Programs and partnerships arise and it becomes a part of our community culture.
  • Substantial progress is being made towards increasing the County's renewable energy base.
  • SEG has a databank of fundraising resources to match people with their interests.
  • EPA certified wood stoves are a norm throughout the county.
  • Biomass vision becomes a reality to support our county.
  • Wind generators in the Shasta Venturi are feeding into the grid system.
  • Active and Passive Solar systems are thriving in the county.
  • Energy Efficient Building design is integrated into the building code.
  • Effective Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Redesign Education Program is thriving: Siskiyou County is nearing zero-waste.
  • Locals choose products from landowners sustainably managing their forests.
  • Inspiring self-determination and personal responsibility

Objectives: How are we going to reach our goals?

  • Education and information sharing
  • Research, community outreach and community building
  • Bring potential partners together

Guiding Principles

The Natural Step: taking small steps to realize our vision
From our vision for sustainability we look backwards to where we are now and devise the appropriate steps to take towards our vision. Every small and strategic step is important.

Promoting the knowledge and use of renewable energy and sustainable solutions is a viable step.

Educational Philosophy: Inspire Community Based Solutions
Knowledge around renewable energy or sustainability is not new or unprecedented.
Communities are wells of information.
SEG acts as a convener and a neutral body bringing people together to learn, understand, and dialogue.
SEG offers information about new technologies and programs to communities.
Education is more than a traditional classroom setting: we touch, feel, see, and demonstrate.
SEG draws attention to issues, inspiring people and communities to design and implement local projects.
Education for outcome: Direct practical outcomes will occur as a result of small steps.

Individual Choices, Relationships
We believe that long-term, effective sustainable solutions will be reached through broad-based collaborative partnerships between grassroots non-governmental organizations, governmental institutions, and businesses.

People would choose renewable energy if provided with financial incentives and programs.

Communication
SEG believes that clear honest and respectful communication is of utmost importance. SEG board members utilize positive and constructive communication skills, and solve conflicts readily and willingly.
We believe in listening to the community and facilitating dialogue for collaborative solutions.
